As stress permeates your life, stress makes emotions "toxic."  The negative, inner self-talk grows louder and you start to believe the worst about yourself. 

You may not be able to avoid stress triggers.

You know how it is; you’re always on the go. You’ve got to be somewhere for yourself or someone else. You drive like it’s a race, hurrying to get somewhere to make it on time to your next appointment or task. It’s no wonder that, with all that stress there’s so much road rage.

Money problems, are a huge source of frustration and stress. They rank near the top of all stressors. In fact, they’re the number one cause of broken relationships.  Money can stress you out whether you’re broke and juggling payments to get by, or figuring out how to pay for your children’s college tuition. And still be able to retire before you’re 90.

The dynamics of your personal
relationships can stress you out, too.

You’re forced into office politics, raising your stress level at work.  You sometimes end up with difficult supervisors or bad co-workers.  Bad work environments make every day seem a living hell and cause you to leave your workplace with a headache nearly every night.

Marriages, romantic, and family relationships, at their best, always come with a high cost of emotional investment and commitment.  The problems of our loved ones and friends, often times, cause us as much or more emotional pain than our own worries.

And if all of the daily challenges aren’t enough, the pace of life is getting faster and faster.  Ironically, technology, once promised as the answer to finding more time to relax with our friends and family, has done just the opposite.

Doesn’t it sometimes seem that the world just won’t let you have an "off-duty" or down moment in your life anymore?

The constant flow of information transforms life in many wonderful ways but it contributes greatly to life’s stressors. Cell phones, email, pagers, and text messaging keep us in touch with each other.  But now wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, you’re expected to be available 24 hours a day. 

You might try to get away from the constant demands of information by literally "unplugging" from the grid for a while.  So you turn off your cell phone and computers. You don’t check your email for while, and you let the phone ring without answering while you spend a few wonderful hours of peaceful bliss. 

But you know what happens next.  When you return from your quiet "unplugged" oasis, you’re greeted with a flood of phone, email or fax messages all screaming; "Where have you been!, I’ve been trying to reach you!"  And the stress builds as you scramble to return all the messages (of course marked "urgent").

The secret of relaxation isn’t found in disconnecting from life, and frankly, you can’t drop out for long. The secret is in learning how to remain calm and relaxed while staying connected.

Many people spend their entire lives overwhelmed and struggling with self-imposed limitations. They never deal with the root stress that’s the cause of their frustration.  Feeling hopeless and bound up, they watch as their dreams drift away.

Stress can make you physically sick.

If you don’t find a solution to these inner struggles and conflicts, stress will grow until it wears you out to the point of physical and emotional exhaustion. Health and sickness studies have shown that stress is related to 80% - 90% of illnesses today.

What is stress and how does it affect you?

There are two forms of stress that we deal with. The first is known as situational stress.  That’s the kind of stress that’s caused by what’s happening around you.  We see these kinds of stressors every day: another gray day, the morning traffic jam, or another person’s behavior. 

The second form of stress can make you sick,
and even kill you over time.

The second type is known as internal stress. That’s what happens inside you as you react to what’s happening outside yourself. For example, "road rage."  Let’s say you’re driving and get irate when someone cuts you off or waits too long before going at a light?

Stress experts say when you have strong negative reactions to triggers (like in road rage), it really stems from an over-reaction.  It may seem like the cause of your problem is "the jerk" that just cut you off, but it’s really the way you interpret that experience internally that causes your stress.

Internal stress is really a conflict between
your conscious and subconscious mind.

As that over-reactive behavior is repeated over and over, the intensity grows and generates more and more stress on our internal organs. That stress, if left unattended, may eventually cause physical or emotional illnesses.

 

Stress can manifest itself in many forms of chronic and degenerative physical illness including:

  • Weakened immune systems
  • Common cold and flues
  • Migraine headaches
  • Heart disease
  • A.D.D.  and  A.D.H.D.
  • Arthritis
  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Cancer
  • Chronic back problems
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Colitis
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Hypertension
  • Premenstrual syndrome
  • Psoriasis,
  • Strokes Ulcers

 

What are the symptoms of stress-related illness?

Symptoms of stress vary but include fatigue, trouble sleeping, hypertension (high blood pressure), migraine headaches, or chronic back or neck pain.  Stress also has emotional effects: depression, fear, a lack of joy in your life.

You may have already tried therapy, medication, or participation in entertainment and recreation, and you still feel the stress in your life. You may still just want and need some relief from the stress; help to be focused again, to feel energized, and to just have a decent night's sleep.

The medical profession understands that external pressure causes internal organs to tighten up with stress. They know that when this happens the body doesn’t function properly and the risk of sickness increases greatly. A medical doctor will tell you to improve your lifestyle, get plenty of sleep, and eat a healthy diet.

They may even prescribe medication for the symptoms, but the underlying causes of your condition still exist. And to really get better you’ve got to deal with the real root cause: the sources of stress.

Unfortunately the conventional wisdom in the "professional treatment" industry is to try and get you to buy into three myths about stress-related problems. Myths that, incidentally, keep you suffering, and…

…most importantly, keep you coming back
and paying for more treatment.

Myth one is that you’re supposed to just live with stress problems. Myth two is that you shouldn’t really expect to relax unless you’re on vacation or holiday. And myth three? If you can just ignore or suppress your stressful feelings long enough, they’ll go away on their own.

You might be happy to know that all three myths are nonsense!

You weren’t made to be stressed out at all. Your "natural" state is to be relaxed and focused, with an amazing capacity for a higher quality of living.

You don’t have to wait until you’re on vacation to enjoy vacation level relaxation each and every day!

My friend, I know what it’s like to suffer and be overwhelmed by life’s problems, too. But I discovered a way to quickly and easily get relief from being overwhelmed and stress, and also discovered amazing new ways to get so much more out of life using relaxation and meditation.

I’m originally from the beautiful, sunny island of Barbados and now live in Canada.  Growing up in Barbados, I was taught money was not all there is to life. I left Barbados to attended college in Canada.

I graduated with a degree in Business Management and went to work. I soon forgot what my family had taught me while growing up, and I was caught up in the desire to have everything, and have it all "instantly." By "everything", I mean material wealth and possessions.

One wise person once said; "beware of your possessions lest they someday possess you", and I certainly learned the hard truth of that wisdom. I worked for twenty years in the extreme tension and stress of corporate sales.  I was very successful as a salesperson in that high-stress, fast-paced world…

But I had broken all the rules of inner harmony and peace,
and as a consequence, I was tired, unhappy, unfulfilled, stressed, disillusioned and negative.

I began to have health problems, one after another. My family and friends told me I was becoming hard to get along with.  And if job- related stress and emotional problems weren’t already enough to deal with…

…my wife left me; I was forced into bankruptcy,
and I began experiencing excruciating back pain.

Out of desperation, I began to search for answers and learned that the root problem was stress and how I handled it. The turning point came for me with one simple realization; that I could not force things to happen, or to go any faster.

I remembered things that my grandmother, parents and friends in Barbados had taught me such as; life is a simple process. I had to learn to stop fighting it and trying to swim upstream all of the time. I had to learn to relax and go with the natural flow of life. 

I finally started to listen to my inner voice again and learned to stay connected to it in a calm relaxed state of mind.  As a result I had a sense of knowing that I’d found what I was seeking, that I would become who I really wanted to be, and that my back pain would go away.

At that point I knew I was connected to something amazing and powerful that would guide me to better health, genuine happiness, and real success, and so I made a commitment to go and teach others how to get in touch and stay connected, as well.

Meditation is silent place – a place where there is no inner chatter. Total silence. In that moment of calm and relaxation when everything stops, you begin to hear your inner voice and gain profound insights.

I studied the relaxation and meditative practices of cultures that incorporate them into daily life. I learned that it was the key element to what I, and countless others suffering from the effects of stress, needed to be free.

I studied and learned the techniques of how to have a "quiet mind", and listen to my inner voice. I learned the key to balance and harmony in life was found in relaxation and meditation. I also learned that I couldn’t meditate without learning how to relax first.

Meditation has been practiced for ages and has been studied and recognized for its benefits by people of many cultures worldwide. Western cultures have largely lost track of the art. Once I understood what meditation was, I wanted the benefits that come with it. 

What is the inner voice and how does it help?

The answer to that depends on who you ask. Some believe the inner voice is your conscience.  Native Americans and other indigenous tribal people believe it’s your spirit guide or the echoes of your ancestors speaking to you.  Some believe it’s a higher power.

Many think that it’s the sub-conscious mind or higher intellect at work. No definitive answer can be given but it seems that whatever people believe is influenced by their culture and personal beliefs or faith systems.

What is known though, is the amazing effect of relaxation with meditation on the lives of the people that practice it.
